Do all newts (rough skinned, or other) spazz out sometimes in the water? Mine will swim up and pop their heads out, and wiggle up and down side to side, like they can't find a place to settle (they have plenty). It is not just the normal air gulp...

I have a P. labiatus that does this. Her tank is fine and so is she, so I just accept it, though I always feel like she's trying to get out.

My FBNs sometimes do this, right up against the glass. No idea why. Its probably normal. Fish do it all the time as well, exept under the water, not at the top.

are these newly brought newts? because i hav read that stressed newts swim franticlly if they are disturbed ,just wait a while and let them settle in if they are new.But if they are not new you might have to reduce stress by dimming down the lights or lowering the tempreture.Hope i helped!

My roughskins did this on occasion. You can help out by putting haulouts (I used silk plants) along the edges of the tank. During a 'freak out', they run into the plants, and can pull themselves out. I found it reduced the freakouts a lot.
