Hi.
This is my first post and I would like to share my experience with axolotls unfortunately my first axies pasted away and I couldn't find out why. I want to start again, but this time making some changes to the aquarium.

This is my aquarium

An those were my axies.

The first thing I am going to change is the substrate, the original one was too small and the axies eat it.

I will remove all the fishes I never saw them making any harm to the axies, but maybe they produced parasites.

Now the question:
I am using the especial substrate for plants, this substrate will be covered by bigger rocks and the axies will not have access to it, but I wonder if this substrate contains any substance that can be dangerous. what do you think?

I am not sure what the 'especial substrate' is but if it has any chemicals, etc in it I advise you not to use it. Fish can handle that stuff a lot better than amphibians so axolotls often have troubles with it. Just use sand or a bare tank floor. Also to keep plants alive can be a struggle as the light bothers axolotls so consider that when setting up your new aquarium.

But yea, your current substrate might have killed your axies as they will ingest that stuff and it can get impacted.

When you got fish, did you quarantine them? Probably it is best not to keep fish in your axie tank unless you don't mind them being eaten or they aren't aggressive fish.

Thank you for your answer...
The substrate that I am talking about is this http://americanaquariumproducts.com/Substrate.html

About the light, on the back part of the aquarium is dark because the plants on the back covers this area, besides, the plants that I am using do not require too much light and the period of lighting will be reduce to 4 hours and the lamps will be a little more higher.

About fishes, the all are very little because they were born in the aquarium is like the second generation. I know that axies can eat them and it is ok to me, I also know that if they are to big they can try to wat the gills, tha is why I removed the biger ones and just left the very litte ones.

I am making some changes to the aquarium I will update the photos so you can give me you opinion before putting the axies again.

Hi Poseidon and welcome to the site,

I am also not familiar with the substrate you mention. I have no substrate and no problems. Your tank and setup looks great.

You could add another hide a two and could increase your water level but otherwise it looks like a place axies would love to live.
