Gallery uploading troubles

Okidoki...
has anyone else had this message when trying to upload pictures? I have been trying for over a week and in the process I did manage to get the very same pictures up onto yahoo groups axolotl list, but here I get the following error message.
Sorry Pixiegriff -Bad Open - Cannot Open the images Directory for Writing
I go into the gallery, click upload, browse images, select image, continue, enter title and description and continue, then I get ERROR
Please tell me what I am doing wrong...I have tried everything from retaking pictures, saving in a million places and browsing and selecting from my pictures, desktop, etc. each time it's the same.
Thanks John for your prompt emails back to me, but I am still stuck, and my husband has now bounced you out of our emails by accident, so I won't see you in my emails now...he was trying to help me...hahahaha phew, fat lot of good he was, huh?

I've had this exact problem since I first registered. I've tried using two different computers to upload pictures from, but I always get the same error message.

Can you please tell me exactly what you are doing when this error occurs please? (like, "I click this then I click that and then I choose this")

Sure. I go to the gallery and click 'upload', then select category 'Notophthalmus'. Then I click 'upload file from my computer' and browse for this image (500 x 375, 77.9 kb):



So I get something like this:



Then I hit 'upload' at the bottom. And I always get the same error message:

Thank you. Please try now and tell me if you have the same problem again.
