I hope someone can help me, I'm trying to keep the temperature in axolotl tank down, especially over the summer months as occassionally it has been creeping above 20. I've got one Leucistic type axolotl, which is 1 and a half years old. He's doing really well & seems fine. At the moment I'm using an ice bottle, as it doesn't happen that often, but I know this can be dangerous. I'd like to know of a safer way, without spending over £200 on a water cooler, any ideas?

Hi Penny,

I have had the most success with closing windows and curtains from about 11 a.m. until late evening, and leaving them open overnight and in the morning. In this way, I have actually been able to make the apartment downright chilly - and the aquaria were 19-20°C while it was 36° C outside.

Other tips and info is available here: http://www.caudata.org/cc/articles/cooling.shtml

Good luck,

-Eva

Taking the hood off and a fan blowing across the surface of the water will produce a few degrees of evaporative cooling. Eva's method works and the link gives other ideas.

Do look at local sources of heating, especially lights. I use a lot of lights for my plants. Moving the power supply units away from the tank and cutting lighting helps. If you do not have plants leave the lights off.

You do not need to worry too much about temperatures in the low 20's. It is at about 24C that axolotls seem more vulnerable to trouble, but even at this temperature they are OK if water conditions are good.

If you had a new axolotl in an uncycled tank it would be a different matter. I'm sure you can think of better uses for £200.

My tank has been constantly at 21-22 degree the past couple of days as we have found a summer of sorts. My axolotl has been coping fine. Sometimes your axolotl will be fine you just got to keep an eye on him. I have a reef fan keeping mine cool.
