Well I was wondering what cardiac and short-toes are cause I can't find any pictures of the different ones. Also I was wondering if there are specific names for the ones with different colored gills or is that jus random?

Re: Little ?

Like bellabelloo I'm not sure I've understood the question!

Cardiac lethal and short toes are recessive mutations in axolotls which if present in both parents cause about a quarter of eggs to have defective development. They are not colour mutations.

From memory cardiac lethal die near to hatching and short toes are sickly axolotls with short toes which later develop severe bloat due to kidney failure.

They have scientific and research uses and have helped understanding of human cardiac development and kidney function. Recessive traits by definition may be carried by normal axolotls. A good breeder should not be selling or breeding as pets from known carriers of these traits or selling affected individuals with the short toes mutation (as opposed to an axolotl whose toes have been nibbled), affected individuals will rarely be seen in outbred stock.

Re: Little ?

This place says they sell axies but they have five types and three mutations and to specify type and mutation. Do you think this means they only sell defective animals, cardiac, short-toes and eyeless?

Re: Little ?

hey,
When they talk about the five types are they not thinking of wild type, leucistic, golden, melanoid and pied?

Their aren't many pied in the U.S. the 5 types are probably wild type, leucistic, gold albino, white albino, and melanoid. Those are the 5 types I work with. I've added Green fluorescent ones to confuse things and now have gfp leucistic and gfp wild type. This year I'll probably also have gfp melanoid.

If the site talks about some of the lethal genes it probably supplies to only universities and labs. Although axolotls can be triggered to breed year round most breeders breed them seasonally. My axolotls breed normally for me in the fall and winter. Now is kind of the off season for axolotls. It's tough to find a variety of axolotls available to hobbyists in the summer and fall.

Re: Little ?

Well it looks like my only option in the Us is wardsci.com. If anyone knows of any other sites or leads to an axie let me know. They only have wild type and albino.I really wanted a albino melanoid. I was supossed to order today but my teach never called me back. I jus want to get all the loose ends taken care of. Also I wanted to thank all of you guys and girls, you've helped me so much, and thanks again.:supercool:

When I ordered from Ward's they had 2 choices, wild type and albino. Its a toss up whether you're getting a golden or a white. There's no way to know.

How about this site? There are almost always axolotls available in the for sale section.
