Hi,

We're getting an Axie in the next 2 weeks hopefully and are in the process of getting all the feeding supplies. We're a little confused as to the best staple diet. Obviously variation is key but what is the best kind of staple food to feed?

We have noticed on some sites selling pellets that it is not to be used as a Staple diet due to the high protein content (40%).

What is your staple diet for the axies?

Thanks in Advance. ;)

Hi Jacksonuk,

The best staple for axolotls is earthworm or salmon/trout pellets if you can get them.

I personally use red wriggler earthworm and pellets as my staple and on occasion will give the axolotls frozen bloodworm cubes and live blackworm.

These articles give a thorough description of suitable foods for axolotls and will give you something to sink your teeth into...or rather your axies ;)

Thanks for your reply. Are Axolotl pellets the same as Trout/Salmon pellets. I thought they would be the same but just marketed under a different name. There is a bait shop about 5 mins walk from my house so worms aren't a real problem...just rather feed pelleted food if its just as good for Axies.

If the axolotl pellets have 40% protein, they sound good to me! :D Axolotls need high protein in their diet.

The pellets are not bad as a staple. The only trouble is that they are so high in calories. All that means is that you only have to give a very little bit and not too often - it is still enough nourishment for the axolotl. Most people tend to overfeed with pellets, though - it seems so unsatisfying to offer a pellet or two every couple of days - and therein lies the danger.

Yes, I agree with Eva
it's important that you don't overfeed your Axolotl and that you change the food.
You can also feed little freshwater fishes either freezed or living, e.g. Black mollys or so on.
Don't feed living cansers, they could nibble the gills.

Yeah, i know that from previous pets that a varied diet is key.

So a worm a day would be about right then? Also can the worms be frozen then defrosted before feeding? I imagine it wouldn't do anything to the nutritional content of the worm.

I'm thinking of mixing between Pellets, Worms, Bloodworm, Daphnia ect.

Depends on the size of your Axie mate. I feed my adults 2-3 times a week. It's usually a mixture of what I can find in the garden (worms, slugs and woodlice) and a few pellets.

Youngsters, I feed everyday - unless they are looking overfed; I try and introduce as much variety as soon as they'll eat dead food.

I'm still concerned. I'm feeding him 1-2 worms a day. He's taking them fine, no regurgation.
He's roughly 10cm long.

How much should i be giving him?

Hi Jackson,

Depends on the size of the worm. At your axolotl's size, I would be feeding him once daily. The amount is kinf od hit-and-miss. I'd say stick with your regime and if you notice he is getting fat, cut back to one worm a day, and then one worm every second day if necessary.

Mine are 18cm and 16cm long and i feed them around 1cm square of squid mantle a day with a treat in the form of an earth worm each every few weeks, it keeps them from being over fed and the daily interaction keeps them in a feeding pattern they get used to (they know they're going to get fed when the sun rises and actually swim to the surface and wait). I found pellets were useful whilst they were under 10cm long but afterwards they could be ignored on the bottom fairly often as they were two small to register and not very satisfying for the axolotl to eat.

I feed my adult axies every day. Mine are feed froxen white bait, they seem to like white bait. I change that and then feed them frozen blood worms, and also frozen beef heart, so they don't get sick of eating the same food every day.

Do you do anything to the white bait. I have some sitting in the frezer for fishing. I never really occured to me to feed it to my axies. I got them fresh from the bait shop and then froze them

No. I just bought them frozen from the pet shop and then I cut them into small enought pieces and feed them to the axies by hand. The aquariums sell this as axie food. Mine love white bait and also frozen blood worm.

Do you (or anyone else think this will be ok to feed them, if I cut it up to lotl food

I was like you, didn't know you could feed them white bait. but I deal with about 4 aquariums who sell axolotls and they said it's fine. My axies are adult now and I have feed them white bait on and off for weeks and they are fat and healthy. If it is the smalll white bait that they sell in the aquariums then yes, but if it's from a bait shop, I,m not sure whether it is the same. I cut the head and tail off the white bait when I feed them. Never had any problems feeding them white bait. Frozen blood worm they seem to like as well. I have been going on trial and error with my axies and everything that I have feed them has been fine. Cheers Carol.
