Hey everyone,

hopefully this will be a quick one. I got back from holiday having left my axolotls in the care of my very capable boyfriend to find that my newest axie Murmur has eaten the plant in her tank almost down to a stump. She ate well the whole time i was away ( they get worms, brine shrimp, daphnie, blood worms, etc on rotation to stop them getting bored ) and whilst i initially thought the plant had just died and rotted quickly this morning i saw her chewing on what was left. We've only had her a couple months but it's the first time she's done it because the plant was intact before i left and our other axie Pebble who we've had for ages has never shown any interest in eating his plants.
Just wondered if anyone else has observed this behaviour and weather or not it could be harmfull, did a quick search but typing this sneakily from work so appologies if this question was answered previously.

Thanks for taking the time,
Sharna

Hi Sharna,

Axolotls will munch on anything they can wrap their mouths around. Mine attack the plastic plants and if these were live plants I'd be constantly replacing them. Mine will even snap at large rocks ten times their size. With a live plant, the plant will break apart and make more munch sized portions for the axie to...well...munch on.

My axololts are merciless when it comes to eating worms for example, they tend to suck it in and blow it out like spaghetti - they will consume the whole thing if it takes all night. Plants they would do the same thing to if given the chance.

Thanks for the swift reply!

As long as it's normal that's fine, just a bit worried because she's new and my other axolotl hasn't ever done that. Guess i'll just have to buy her a big tough plastic one now.
Thanks again,

Sharna

Ah, found the thread I was looking for!

Here you are, this thread may help it's on axies eating plants.

My $0.02, I would buy silk plants over plastic. They look more realistic, and are softer.
