Is it normal for an eastern newt (or any other newt for that matter) to look a little opaque or dull before shedding?

Have you noticed that before a shed, an eastern newt (or any other newt for that matter) will look a little opaque or whitish? I have seen this with tree frogs before shedding, but I am worried and want to make sure that it is normal. I am worried about possible fungal infection or ich. Though it is not super noticeable, and my other two male newts do not look like this. I really doubt it is something that one could notice in a photo, at least not from any camera I have!

Hi
I bought a plant from an aquarium shop a while ago and after I put it in the water noticed it had some tiny little snails on it, I took out the ones I could see and after a while the plant died anyhow so removed the lot. Since then id noticed a couple of these mini snails on the tank glass and wondered if they are ok to leave or should I take out, earlier today I noticed quite a few more so they seem to be multiplying quite rapidly.
Should I be doing a full clean out of them?

So I have this 48''l x 18''w x 20''h aquarium for my future axolotl or two. I put 40 gallons of water in yesterday and it filled 2/3rds of the aquarium. I bought an API freshwater master test kit, a 40 gallon Tetra in-tank filter (three stage filtration) , some play sand for substrate (which says not to use in aquariums), and 7 gold fish to help start the cycling process along.

As I was rinsing the pre-rinsed sand for the third time, the water was still muddy looking and notice the "Do Not use in aquariums" so I think I may be at a loss with the sand for now....or am I??? What do you guys suggest??? Should I go ahead and start cycling now without substrate (This is my first experience)??? Will I have to recycle the tank when I decide to do the substrate or can I keep rinsing what I have and use it anyway???

Any help or.02 will be appreciated. I want to get this going!!!

Thanks,
Derek

How big is your axie and how old is he/she?

Just curious as I'm going to buy a baby axie soon. I feel a bit of a tight bum as I only got an 18" tank, which as you probably know, is the suggested 'acceptable minimum' on axolotl.org. I do plan on getting a bigger tank when it's bigger :)

I want to know what sort of trust fund to set up for my baby axie so it can get a palace when it comes of age!

I got my 2 about a month and a half ago, one male, one female and they produced a clutch of 100ish eggs a month ish ago. Only one hatched and only 10 in all even got close to hatching (maybe her first spawning?)
They are both 8 inches long.... anyone want to hazard a guess as to their age?
Any insight would be appreciated

I've had my axies since April, and they've been doing great :) They eat sinking pellets, frozen (and sometimes live) bloodworm and they live in a 50L tank (to be upgraded when they're bigger)

However, I had them on sand, originally it was about 2" deep and of course, I had a problem with anaerobic areas under the sand :( I stirred the sand every day when I picked up food, etc with a piece of airline, but I still had the problem. I removed a large majority of the sand and they are now on 5mm at the most of sand, in some areas it's bare where they have moved it around themselves. And even with such a small depth I still get green sand :(

They are also currently running on a sponge filter as the internal failed in the last few days. I also have a problem with planaria (come about in the last few days, likely underpowered filter).

What I'm thinking of doing is putting in either gravel that is <1mm or much larger than the size of their heads. I have gravel in my other tanks (coldwater Ranchus) and so will be able to vacuum the gravel, etc.

I'm going to get a new filter, and some more hides for them.

It did used to be planted, but in low light conditions they soon died :/ (My axie tank was my first and I've learnt a lot, even just about keeping plants!)

Stats are all good, and they are still happy, active and eating.

So, advice on gravel (I know it tends to be a big no-no, but I've also read about it being ok in certain sizes), filters and anything else I can do to enrich their lives.

Thanks a lot.

How the tank looked about 2 months ago.

I'm Lexxi, I'm 18 and I'm a Philosophy and Film student.

I have 2 beautiful axies, a leucistic and a wild coloured, called Maya and Aztec, respectively.

They live in a 50L growing out tank as they're only small, but will be moved to a larger home eventually.

So, the other day I gave my Axie a worm, one she began eating as normal, but later i then noticed she spit it back up, it was then she began acting weird, she wouldnt eat anything after that, not worms, not blood worms not pellets, nothing. in fact she was even backing away from the food (and anything else) like she was scared, n interaction at all. she was in her cave just hiding, not moving. she stayed there for over 24 hours, not moving at all, this was when i started getting really concerned, she kept opening her mouth though and twitching her gills (which were bright red, shes albino btw) so at first a thought maybe it was the water, i did a pH test which read 7.6 (which i guess is a perfect pH..?) after some research of her symptoms i began thinking maybe it was heat stress as the weather has been warm recently. after coming to this conclusion of heat stress i went ahead and put her in a large bowl with some fresh room temp water and decided to fridge her. i covered the bowl with a lid and a towl and now shes been there for about 2 days. oddly though rather than going into hybernation mode, she seems to be moving a bit more than before and where as usually when shes in colder temps her gills are white they are still bright red! she still refuses food, and wont do anything except occassionally turn, or move slightly. shes getting pretty thin and im really worried, she doesnt seem to be hybernating at all either, yet even after more than a day of not moving her skin in flushed and her gills are bright bright red....i really dont know what to do, and her not eating is scaring me....how do i help her? should i consider force feeding her? what could be causing her to be so flushed yet inactive? please help!

Sorry for all the questions. I had a wee search first but the post I found resulted in me needing to ask this.

My gold laid white eggs, but she's come out with a second batch (already!) and some of them are brown. I read the colour of eggs depended on genetics but she is having both colours. Is this normal?
Can anyone clarify this for me?

Will this mean the brown eggs are different coloured axies? I'd loooove some gold babies.

The white eggs came out as what look like wildtypes, but some may change into spotty leucistics like the father. My first ever batch are off to a great start, two weeks old and only just had the first casualty today. So much fun :D I think I'll raise some every year if it continues to go well

Hello all, id like to start out by saying that.

NOW down to business LOL. im 37 and have NEVER owned a reptile/lizard of any kind. my wife is a veterinary technician so we do have a large amount of mammal knowledge however that helps us VERY little when it comes to our newest house mate.

below is a pic of our little friend Wellington. my wife named him that since she found him in out window well. our basement is 5 feet underground so we have those deel windows that we can get into and crawl out up the ladder. anyway she was in the window pulling the weeds that often grow in there and she screams AHAHAHAH a fregging lizard!!! i go look and sure enough is a small gecko at least thats what i thought. i looked online and turns out he is a tiger salamander? any way he is about 5 inches long black with green splotches. i know he cant get out of this area at all, so i figute he has been in there since our house was built 2 years ago. he is really cool!! i havent touched him since i kinda want him to stay wild, yet i know he does not get a lot of food due to the fact that we have our house sprayed outside for spiders/bugs etc (its farm land and bugs are everywhere) anyway we put a little rock type bowl in there for water and another for food...mealworms are so far what ive read to give him. my questions are

1. what else can he eat?
2. what type of care does he need?
3. the winter is coming wil he die in the snow here in Colorado? our windows are Plexiglas covered so our girls dont fall in.

he has a pretty deep little hole he lives in, so deep i cant see him in it

any info will help guys

thanks a lot

I have taken a great interest in tiger salamanders and axolotls since my 8 year old tarantula passes last week..... I have a 75 gallon aquarium that I think might be perfect for one or two or more!!!

I just cant make up my mind which one I want, but I'm leaning towards the axolotl....which type should I start out with??? I would like to have a variety of colors as I get more experienced.... I've raised a red boa and it died of old age and I've raised a tarantula and she just passed...I've never had an amphibian before, but I have a feeling this is the right place to learn.... I plan on doing a lot of research before I dive in and throw some water and rocks in a tank, not having a clue, just to murder the little guy...

I'm currently working on a relocation project involving the capture and relocation of smooth newts (in the UK). Recently we've been finding some smooth newts with 'lumpy' skin. This is obviously an illness of some sort since smooth newts do not have warty skin. The newts sometimes show jerky movement which also indicates that this may be an illness of some kind. The lumps distort the newt's body shape and do not exude any fluids of any kind. I've never seen a disease of this kind amongst my own pet newts and haven't seen this amongst wild newts either.

We have been reluctant to take these newts to the new site for fear that it is a contagious disease and we do not want to contaminate the new site.

I have attached a couple of photos of one of the more serious looking newts. You may be able to make out the lumps, some of which distort the face as well as the body.

Just incase it aids a disgnosis, the site is potentially chemically contaminated which is why the current verdict is chemical burns. However so far the sick newts found have been randomly spread around the large site which would suggest that a chemical on the ground is not to blame. We also use carpet tiles which may have chemical dyes on them or such like, could they cause an issue? Perhaps it is a commonly occurring disease in wild newts (or amongst pet newts) that someone recognises?

Even if you can't suggest a particular disease please post suggestions as to what my be the cause of these strange lumpy newts so that we can act appropriately during our relocation efforts.

I got my three Chinese fire-bellied newts in May and I thought they were still babies till I started seeing eggs. Once the eggs started coming I bought a couple of 160l tanks and got my big newts set-up nicely in one of them where they continued laying and seem quite happy.

Anyways I put the eggs into the ex-big newt tank. When I was changing out some water I noticed some small insects (look like tiny spiders, don't think spiders can swim :p) scurrying around the bottom of the jar, should I worry about these things eating the eggs?

I lost the first six eggs to mould and there are a few mouldy looking eggs in the tank now but have spotted three developing ones (hard to see cos of the gravel). I now have three plants and a weak filter with a pot in front of it in case it sucks up the eggs. Don't have a spare bubble machine. Does this sound alright?

How do I minimise the mould getting to the eggs?

Just spotted one well-developed egg in the main tank, should I risk moving it so the big ones don't eat it?

Also why does it seem like a million years before the eggs hatch  Thanks to anyone who can be bothered reading and replying

Hiya,

I'm the proud owner of three Chinese fire-bellied newts. I got them this May and they've just started laying their first batch of eggs so am like a mother hen going back and forth all the time making sure they're ok. Have had a few problems with the eggs but I'll stick that in the help forum. As well as my newties I have a dog, cat, two budgies and a tortoise. Bit of a zoo here but it's actually pretty easy to care for them all since they're all different species. Anyhoo I think it's ace seeing pictures of other peoples tanks and animals so I look forward to exploring on here :)

As some of you are aware I am on the hunt to find Gomez a tank mate as I have plenty of space for a friend. I am curious as to how small I can go with a new axie in the same tank as gomez (as finding anything other than juvies for sale is proving a big challenge!) Gomez is 11 inches long (his mouth isnt much smaller) and still growing, I was wondering what is the absolute smallest axie I can get while avoiding any potential conflicts as finding a full grown axie for sale is turning into a nightmare!

I have been looking for 8in+ axies but can I go any smaller? (all the axies I have been to see are between 4-6in and look like they would become lunch in no time!

So what size should I be looking at?
Any idea where I might purchase a "larger" axie from?

Just need to mention I am unable to house a juvie untill grown up as all 3 of my tanks are in use (can do a temporary set up for quarrantine etc but no space for a permanent or semi permanent set up!)

Really dont know what to do!

Any advice, tips, comments welcome or if someone can point me in the right direction of a breeder or somewhere that may be able to provide big axies would be very much appreciated!

Thankyou all!

Hi

Leuka, my juvenile Wild-type seems to be really really hungry. I am not sure why this is as I feed him worms, slugs and/or pellets (axolotl or trout) every day, and the tank is really cold all the time (so not high metabolism due to warm water), and the water parameters are fine. When I first got him, he didn't eat that much (but ate enough), but now he snaps at anything, my fingers, tweezers, even at things outside of the tank going on, and he lies in his feeding jar like begging for food. He generally seems starving. He is not showing any signs of stress, tail straight, gills good, and his stomach is as wide as his head (I was told this is normal weight).

So I was wondering, is anyone else's young axolotl hungry ALL the time? Should I feed him more or will that make him fat?

Thanks

Hey Guys,

I came home yesterday to fine one of my axies (Boba) with an odd tail. Basically it wasn't straight but rather flopped to one side. I also noticed he had his back legs up quite a bit so maybe he has costipation? Also when I was trying to get him out of the tank I noticed a small red patch on his belly. I put him in the fridge overnight with some food (couple of pellets) which he didn't eat and he didn't pass anything. I put him back in the tank this morning with his pals, and he seemed to be more active and looking a bit better with his tail.

I did a water change in the tank, and I keep them on sand so I can't see impactation being an issue, unless he ate a bit of loose drift wood.

Any help would be most appriciated!

Does anyone have any experience with feeding Turkish roaches to their frogs? I have quite a few geckos and frogs so I heard that breeding roaches was much easier and beneficial than crickets. Here is a link to information about the Turkish roach Turkistan Roaches:Blatta lateralis:Turkistan Roaches:Blatta lateralis. My main concern is if their shell would cause damage over time to my frogs even though it says they're thin. I'd most likely only be using medium and large sized juvenile roaches to feed my frogs since my smallest tree frog is a clown tree frog and my biggest would be a red legged walking frog and big eyed moon frogs.

What's good? I just got myself a couple weeks ago 3 fire red belly newts for my tank with 2 eastern newts and many other aquatic creatures. Anyway, I asked the lady at the store if I can place them all together and she said it's fine. These two newts, one being a FBN and another being an EN, they're inseperable. They are always together, and when I try to move them, they go right back to eachother and just sit there.. ALL DAY. Is it possible that they're in love and might possibly mate? I don't even know if these two can actually breed, their both different.

Another thing is, since they haven't moved from the spot. The green eastern newt's face is kind of darker now. Like a black-ish color to his face. Is that normal? I never seen that before and I had these eastern newts for about 5 months now. They're so cute together though. Lol.

The tank is clean; I clean out decaying plant matter, poo, uneaten food, and the slight film of skin on top every few days. I also put in a few ice cubes every few days to help keep the water stay a bit cooler.

There have been no recent changes, other than the temperature outside has dropped a bit. However, my windows aren't open, so they shouldn't be able to detect a change.

Does anyone have any ideas? Should I be concerned? No-one seems ill.

Thanks for your help!

My larvae (still don't know what it is, found in a pond of North Carolina) has greatly lost it's appetite in the past few days. It still eats, but whereas it was eating 6 to 8 small dried bloodworms, it now eats 2 or 3. It's also extremely skittish now.

Could this be a sign that it may be getting ready to morph soon? I will include a picture from about a week ago below.

He's a light brown color covered in little black dots in no apparent order. His gills don't seem to have shrunk, or if they have, they have done so by a miniscule amount.

Thanks for your help!

Ok, I'll try to make this quick and clear coz I really need advice here.

I'm going to try to upload a picture.

All water params at 0 other than nitrate at 0.2mg/L. PH 7. Temp 19-20 degrees.

I'm fairly sure he's a male, but I couldn't be 100%.

I have an Albino Axolotl, approx 2 years old. Yesterday, out of nowhere, he turned pale white. All his gills and eyes lost their colouration and he seems to have a swollen stomach that looks black on the inside. His body has tiny pin prick bright red spots on it and I'm at a loss as to why. He's swimming very unevenly and sometimes turning upside down. He won't eat and I haven't seen him pass any waste in the fridge yet. I've panicked and put him in the salad compartment of the fridge until I can figure out what's going on. This is the first time I've fridged, but felt like I had no choiceHe's in fresh declorinated water. After looking at his tank and testing everything, I fund a small brown slug in there on the side of the tank! It looked just like a common everyday slug and was able to come out of the water surface on the tank. He Lives in a three foot tank on his own with an external filter, 50% water change per week. Bare bottom tank with lots of caves. Diet: Small Earthworms (bought from a good supplier) and frozen bloodworms. I feed him every two to three days and try to rotate what I give him. His been fed mainly on Earthworms for the last couple of weeks due to moving house and the bloodworms defrosting in the move. I'm due to go and buy some more in a couple of days (as I've just found a local place that sells them).

If any can help I'd greatly appreciate it.

Hi everybody!!!
I get a group of palmate newts yesterday (two females and a male), and I've realised that one of the females has a kind of dark blister under the throat. She's got a good weight, she looks healthy and she eats well. I've treated she with salt solutions and antibiotic solution (Esha 2000).

I don't know what it is, but I don't like it. What do I have to do? Did I treated her correctly? How is the proportion of salt?

I will upload photos as soon as possible,
Thanks, I'm so grateful;)

I was wondering if anyone could help us to identify the gender of our two axies. Rho and Speckled Jim ...

In the first photo, Jim is standing on the rock and Rho is suspended mid water. The second is a close up of Rho('s bits) and the third (with the slightly speckled belly) is Jim('s bits).

Thanks
