Just curious as I'm going to buy a baby axie soon. I feel a bit of a tight bum as I only got an 18" tank, which as you probably know, is the suggested 'acceptable minimum' on axolotl.org. I do plan on getting a bigger tank when it's bigger :)

I want to know what sort of trust fund to set up for my baby axie so it can get a palace when it comes of age!

Is there any way to know how old an Axie is?
I got my 2 about a month and a half ago, one male, one female and they produced a clutch of 100ish eggs a month ish ago. Only one hatched and only 10 in all even got close to hatching (maybe her first spawning?)

They are both 8 inches long.... anyone want to hazard a guess as to their age?

Any insight would be appreciated

As some of you are aware I am on the hunt to find Gomez a tank mate as I have plenty of space for a friend. I am curious as to how small I can go with a new axie in the same tank as gomez (as finding anything other than juvies for sale is proving a big challenge!) Gomez is 11 inches long (his mouth isnt much smaller) and still growing, I was wondering what is the absolute smallest axie I can get while avoiding any potential conflicts as finding a full grown axie for sale is turning into a nightmare!

I have been looking for 8in+ axies but can I go any smaller? (all the axies I have been to see are between 4-6in and look like they would become lunch in no time!

So what size should I be looking at?
Any idea where I might purchase a "larger" axie from?

Just need to mention I am unable to house a juvie untill grown up as all 3 of my tanks are in use (can do a temporary set up for quarrantine etc but no space for a permanent or semi permanent set up!)

Really dont know what to do!

Any advice, tips, comments welcome or if someone can point me in the right direction of a breeder or somewhere that may be able to provide big axies would be very much appreciated!

Thankyou all!

Hi

Leuka, my juvenile Wild-type seems to be really really hungry. I am not sure why this is as I feed him worms, slugs and/or pellets (axolotl or trout) every day, and the tank is really cold all the time (so not high metabolism due to warm water), and the water parameters are fine. When I first got him, he didn't eat that much (but ate enough), but now he snaps at anything, my fingers, tweezers, even at things outside of the tank going on, and he lies in his feeding jar like begging for food. He generally seems starving. He is not showing any signs of stress, tail straight, gills good, and his stomach is as wide as his head (I was told this is normal weight).

So I was wondering, is anyone else's young axolotl hungry ALL the time? Should I feed him more or will that make him fat?

Thanks

First - I'd be grateful for any opinions on the sex of my second axi (pics below).

Secondly I'd like some advice on tankmates. I have had one axi for about 4 months (likely female) and the second one for a couple of months. Both have grown quite a bit in that time - the older one is about 10 ins long; the latest addition (in the pics) is about 8 ins long. They are both currently in separate 2ft tanks - but I want to get a 4 or 5ft tank and introduce both axis to it. Are these two likely to be compatible at this size - and are there any other things I need to consider (I am aware of cycling, substrate, hides etc)?

Any advice gratefully received.

Just fed my Axie an earthworm for the first ever time. It was a terrifying experience for all concerned!

Because of how vacant she looks I had visions of me just waving the worm in her face and her doing nothing, but she moved faster than anything I had ever seen in my life!

Only issue is, I'm not sure if the worm I gave her was too big? It was nearly as long as she was. (They look smaller in your garden compared the axie tank!) She sucked it all down like a big piece of spaghetti and I'm pretty sure she enjoyed it. Would I know if it was too big for her, or would she try and eat it regardless of size?

Is there any earthworm/axalotl size rule I should know about? Just so I don't overfeed her or give her something so big she can't eat it and hurts herself?

She definitely enjoyed it though!

Hi Everyone, ive been keeping axolotls for some time now. ive been feeding them guppies every now and then i put in a couple of guppy fry (i have a different tank for my breeding guppies)
I did;nt take my axolotls to work out they are easy food.
But i've just been told by another member that guppies should not be with axolotls.
Am i in the wrong here in feeding my guys guppies?

Plus ive also been told to feed my axies Prawns which i aways thought these are bad for them due to the bactirca they contain.

Sorry for the weird questions but if im feeding them wrongly i need to know.

Does anyone else use guppies as feeder foods

Cheers

I have some loose plants in my tank. They are pretty close to ancharis, skinnier. My fat female axolotl was eating it, a good 4 inches of this plant she ate. Freaked me out when I say it for the first time so I stuck my hand in there and snapped off her mouth a good portion of it. This was a good 7 inch plant. Does this happen often? I figured she was starving so I fed her 2 worms. I don't think she is sick, not really worried, its just very bizarre. I'd like to know if anybody has had any experience with this. Are axolotls bodies meant to break down plants?

When I got my first axolotl I had already found this place and done some research but I'm wondering how many people stroll into a pet shop see one and immediately take it home...

Do you think it's worth mentioning this site to pet shop owners to then pass on the word to anyone who buys an Axolotl? Or at least first time buyers. Same goes for all these stores/zoos that are popping up on here recently for not providing the proper care for them.

It's just a thought really as I'm considering passing the message on to the store I got mine from. Would like to know what you folk think? =]

I just left an aquarium fuming mad!

I understand these businesses have a right to make money, and that animals kept for an interim period might not have as fancy set ups as we might give them - but surely these so called "experts" should give their stock a half decent environment!

They had two axie tanks -

1 had 5 axies - bright lights, no shelter, no hides, a few floating weeds. Juveniles <6 mths i'd guess. totally wrong substrate, normal aquarium gravel 4-6 mm dia i'd say, more than easily fit in and block an axie.

One Wild type was floating, gulping, unbalanced, and clearly distressed in this tank

the others looked ok, if a little underweight.

None of them had any gills to speak of, but having not seen my own axies that young, maybe the hadn't developed much yet?

The other tank had a single albino, floating, totally inanimate as far as i could see, and looked like a distended belly (or at least not quite right) - gills were non existent - i stared, and i stared, and i stared - i didn ot see one single movment from the little guy, not a tweak of the gills, or a gulp - i'm sure he was dead if not nearly there.

posture was very "bent"

i had to say something, i told the lady at the counter - I'm pretty sure one is dead, and one is in distress and floating.

i was told "The one on its own is only there bcause the others attacked it, it's fine" (it clearly was not fine by any definition of the word)

"It's totally normal for them to float *POKING THE POOR BUGGER IN THE HEAD* , see he is fine" as the poor thing bolts to and fro across the tank from the rude poking it just got!!!

Taking a deep breath i said "Look, it's not normal for them to float like that, especially if they are gulping and disorientated, they don't like to float and it can be a sign of distress and impaction"

"You need to get rid of that gravel, it is not a suitable substrate for an axolotl, and give them hides or turn the light off"

Her reply "I've been doing this for 26 years, they're fine"

"I see, so 26 years means you can't learn anything more?"

I have made an online report to the RSPCA already.

Can we name and shame them on the forum moderators? I might not be able to "rescue" the poor buggers by buying them, but i sure as hell dont have to encourage anyone to spend any money there!

Sorry for another gender guess thread thingy.
But I recently bought an axolotl (it's about 22 cm) and I was planned to buy a male.

The owner had about 10 axolotls of this size left and this one looked the most like a... male. He has the biggest 'bulge' of 'em all :P
(Anyway: I suck at seeing the difference in tail length and stuff like that...)

I really hope it's a male (or I'll end up with 7 females.... rawr!) and I hope you guys 'n gals can help me (and my axie ofcourse) out.

(See pictures)

Oh and the previous owner fed him bloodworms and now he won't take earthworms whatever I try... I rinse them, wiggle them, feed the smallest but he keeps spitting 'em out and he is pretty much hiding behind his fave plant. -_-'

I know Axolotl's grab a gulf of air now and then helping them with buoyancy or something right? Well mine has been fine so far, however today he was floating on the roof of his/her (It's still a juvenile) tunnel. At the moment it's clinged onto the rocks in the tank and the area from the hind legs to the tail is just floating! It seems to make him struggle when he tries to swim. Is this normal, and should I be concerned?

Also, my Axolotl's gills have changed colors. When I first got him/her (last weekend) the gills were a light pinkish. Earlier this week they turned a dark maroon. Now they are lighter again. Does anyone know why this is?

I got an axolotl a few weeks ago and i have a few questions... he is about 7 inches long now so i was wondering if some one could tell me if it is a boy or a girl. Also it is getting really chubby so i was wondering how often and how much most people feed there axolotls. Mine gets pellets in the morning and brine shrimp cubes at night and through out the day when he "looks hungry" but It always is willing to eat. Is that to much?

I feel a little embarrassed in having to ask, but I have two juvenile axolotls, and I'm not sure how frequently to feed them. I've read that adults should be fed 2-3 times a week, and that larvae should be fed daily, but I'm concerned about the in-between. My lotls are about 2.5" in length, with all limbs developed.
Upon first receiving them (Tuesday) I gave them soft sinking pellets, which were pretty well recieved. I'm wondering when I should introduce their next meal?

Also, does anyone have any tips for keeping the water well chilled that won't stress them out? It hasn't been an issue so far, but I'd like to know, just in case.

Thanks.
