Hello everyone! Just thought I would post and say hello to since I just registered after lurking for about a week or so. I was doing research on Axolotls and found out they are illegal here; what isn't ?My interest in Axolotls was besides their awesome looks, they were fully aquatic. Since I'm posting, I thought I'd ask... Are there any other species that are legal to own in CA that are primarily aquatic? My other interest is the firebelly newts but I am a bit wary of the toxicity since I have dogs (in case it escaped) Back in junior high I had several and learned what great escape artists they were. Back then I didn't have a computer or internet so I wasn't as informed as I should of been. Also, I see the emphasis on CB vs. wild....are there any forum members that reside in CA that also breed? I haven't got a tank setup yet, but once I do I need to experiment on a DIY chiller to see if I can successfully keep temps down and get it cycled before I actually buy any. Thanks for having me! Jay |

Hi Jasone and welcome to the forum! Regarding what species are legal to own in California, I am unfamiliar with California laws and would suggest you check the California Fish and Game Code CALIFORNIA FISH AND GAME CODE. There has been discussion about axolotls and other ambystoma species being illegal in California in this this thread Axolotls are illegal in California - here are the relevant laws Hope these links will at least give you places to start with your question. |

We can have 3 toed amphiumas, my friend currently has some at his store in Orange County, and also sirens, which he's carried before. I can ask him later what else is legal and similar. He wishes he could have axolotls too so he always gets in stuff that looks similar.
