Here might be an interesting article on Salamandrina's ; Both Sergé & Frank Pasmans had already informed me that it might turn out ot become 2 (sub)species Here's the reference MATTOCCIA, M. , ROMANO, A. & SBORDONI, V. (Italy) Mitochondrial DNA sequence analysis of the spectacled salamander, Salamandrina terdigitata (Urodela: Salamandridae), supports the existence of two distinct species Zootaxa 995: 1-19 (25 May 2005) http://www.mapress.com/zootaxa/2005f/zt00995.pdf |

thank you VERY much Henk! I'm quite interested in the article as I know some of the persons involved in this research and some similar ones... ...it's been a long time now that there are "rumours" of the splitting of terdigitata...maybe now it's time to make it officially...ahahah Leo |

Yep, it IS official (although two Italian groups appear to be fighting over who published this first...). The southern ones (Campania and Calabria) are Salamandrina terdigitata; the northern ones Salamandrina perspicillata. Southern ones are smaller, have wider and better defined "glasses" and are somewhat more vividly coloured dorsally (brownish colours on a dark background).
