Do any of you from New Jersey keep Ambystomids? It is my understanding you can't keep them without a permit. I have been told by pet shop owners that permits are hard to get. Who has the facts on this?

not sure about the pet trade, but info about wild caught can be found HERE it's always been my understanding that axolotls and tigers are forbidden. i keep 2 pairs of a. opacum i bought online from other states.... probally not 100% legal since they are a special concern species and i don't have any permits as far as pet shops go i have never seen any terrestrial species ever sold in any mom pop store or chain in the northern nj area where i live. the chains are taking over and hey don't even sell newts. about a year ago i purchased a pair of sickly P. hongkongensis from a large mom/pop store that is now owned by petco, under petco they nolonger carry newts but i do recall getting a permit when buying them |
