Hi all I work as a countryside ranger in Scotland and currently hold a great crested newt license. We are about to put together a leaflet regarding crested newts as an LBAP species (Local biodiversity action plan)and we are looking for some nice cristatus pictures that could be donated for the leaflet. I have a few of my own but they are mostly belly pics or in the hand. Does anyone have some pics that we could 'borrow' that show them underwater with clear crests? thanks very much colin |

Hi Colin. I wish I had read your notice just a few days ago. I currently live in Portugal, but was home in Glasgow for first three weeks in January. I had a Cristasis newt licence (the first one in Scotland I believe) some fifteen years ago, when I persuaded my employers (then called ScotRail) to reflood a small wetland in a triangle formed by three rail lines in the south of Glasgow in order to reintroduce Cristasis into a former habitat there. During that time, I took lots of photos, and came across them last week when cleaning out my parents' attic. I can see if my mother can dig any of them out - they are in slide form - some are still unmounted. You sound like you are doing a good job there - I would be interested in hearing more. Also I learned a lot about re establishing the species, so if I can help in any way I would be pleased. Cheers. |

Hi Colin, just a thought - if you don't have any luck here you could also try asking over at herpetofauna.co.uk. Bob, are your newts still there? I grew up near a GCN site in Eastern Scotland which I later found out is one of the most important in the country. It also has the other two newts and common frogs and toads. Last time I was back home I visited it again, and a lot of work had been done restoring older ponds, digging new ones, creating hibernation areas etc. Good to see. |

Hi colin, I have a small handful of photos I'd be happy for you to use in the interest of conservation (copyrighted of course but you can use them for free). I have a license myself so have an abundance of 'in the hand' photos too. But I do take time out occasionally to take 'on the grass' and 'in the water' photos too. If you could PM me your E-mail address I'll send over some photos for you to look at and you can see if any suit your leaflet. Good luck
