I, admittedly, confused my favorite newtie today. You see, I use a turkey baster to aide me at feeding time. When I first got my newts, I put them in separate containers to feed. I take the turkey baster and pull some water from their own tank and put them in a separate dish at feeding time. I've found this to be a good system since I only have three newts, and one of my tanks is unfiltered (and my finicky cynops lives there. You never know if she's going to eat or not!) This allows me to know how much each newt eats, and also to get a good look at them to make sure everything is okay.
Anyway, my best guy is a five or 6 inch long taricha. He's very active, and is great fun to watch. When I bring over the turkey baster, he knows it's feeding time! He watches and swims around me as I pull out some water, his small female companion, and finally him.
But today i used the baster for something different. I just cleaned the gravel about a week ago, but there were a few huge piles of poop as well as the remains of my last petsmart plant (thank goodness they're finally all gone, what a mess!)
So here's the cute part, as I was sucking out poop and dead plants, Eticoon of course thought it was feeding time! So he swam over and put one arm around the turkey baster and went along for a ride as I basted out the yucky stuff! It was so cute, I wish I'd had a video camera rolling. He swam circles around it a few times, then put one arm around and just sat there, being pulled slowly through the water for a little ride. Very cute! (Sorry I'm so long winded). Hope you guys think that is as cute as I do. (Although I really wish I had at least a photo of it!)
