CITES- Convention on International Trade of Endangered Species

CITES regulates the trade of protected species (endangered and threatened). There are three articles to CITES, I, II, and III. These regulate how endangered a species is considered. Animals which are listed on CITES cannot be traded internationally without permits, regardless of their origin.

CITES: Convention on International Trade of Endangered Species [link to www.cites.org]. CITES regulates the trade of protected species (endangered and threatened). There are three articles to CITES (I, II, and III), which indicate how endangered a species is. Animals listed in CITES cannot be traded internationally without permits, regardless of their origin.

Red List: A list of endangered and threatened species. The best-known red list is maintained by the World Conservation Union (IUCN [link to www.iucnredlist.org]). Individual countries or states may also maintain their own red lists.
