Default GBR Press: Road-builders help to rehouse creatures

SOUTH WALES ECHO (Swansea, UK) 02 September 08 Road-builders help to rehouse creatures (Ben Glaze)
Hundreds of newts, toads and slow worms have been moved to new homes as part of a major road-building scheme.
Amphibians disturbed by preparatory work for the Church Village bypass have been taken to ponds, while a bridge has been built for dormice.
The five-mile road will include four roundabouts and ease pressure on the A473 around Church Village, Tonteg and Llantwit Fardre.
Principal ecologist for RPS Group Brian Chilcott said: ďThere is strong support among the team for the work we are doing. We have trans-located a larger number of reptiles than had been originally predicted in the early surveys, notwithstanding the weather has not been good for encouraging reptiles into the open.Ē
The project manager for construction firm Costain, Barry Woodman, said: ďWe are really pleased with the progress we are making and remain mindful of the impact of our work on the environment and the local communities.Ē
Since April more than 200 newts, 146 toads and 30 common frogs have been moved.
