Default Four new species of Onychodactylus described

Over the past several years, a growing body of evidence has indicated that the clawed and lungless hynobiid stream salamanders are more diverse than the two named species. O.fischeri is at least two species, while O.japonicus could be as many as six.

A study published tomorrow in Zootaxa recognizes three species groups and names four new species, with the O.fischeri group containing only O.fischeri; other former "fischeri" being named to the O.koreanus group [containing also O.zhaoermii and O.zhangyapingi]; and the O.japonicus group being divided in two by the addition of O.nipponoborealis.

The abstract is suggestive of possible additional species, but isn't clear on this and I do not yet have the paper itself to review.

I filed my order for about a dozen papers, including this one and the others we discussed. Usually takes about two weeks through my university before the hard copies show up.

In the interim, photos of all the species, plus eggs, larvae, and a map of species and genetic populations, are all available in Nikolay Poyarkov's photo album:

Check out his other albums for a ton of other herp and field work images...plus other stuff.
