Mark, those Marms appear to be Evil. I would keep them away from the rest of your stock. Sending them to me would be the best thing at this point.Would you like my address?

Ha ha, nice try sean. I'll pass on the address and suffer their evil ways. They are slowly leaving the darkside and are starting to worship the god of "tweezer", who appears from the sky bearing gifts, they'll be singing hymns soon...

I've heard from some that marms can be quite the little squeakers, is this true?

The only time i heard them squeak was when the adults took a gulp of air or when I picked one up to measure. You'd hear this audable sound like when you do a short raspberry with your lips.

Will, I only have 4. CB in Germany.

I haven't heard the Marms squeak -but they are only an inch long. My Pleuros squeak and my Ambystoma also squeak when startled. I wouldn't call it proper vocalisation, more of a fast expel of air as part of an escape response.

can I get out here...?

The maculatum had a clean out today. Here's some of them before they dived for cover. On-top of moss to under moss in 4 seconds. One has gone very dark for some reason.

This reminds me of a Brian Lumley story "Beneath the Moors" where these beings which were almost amphibious of nature worshiped their "great water lizard" deity, Bokrug. They were known as the singers of strange songs. The beings of Lh-Yib. Just struck a chord there! Sorry for being off topic.

A picture of my baby marms and their current housing. The line on their back is yellow.

The morphs are all around 1 inch (2.5 cm) in size. They have started to eat chopped worms from tweezers. I've also fed them red mosquito larvae.

Looking great Ester! Mine have a more yellowy green. I haven’t found any worms small enough to feed them yet. Mine are on 1st and 2nd instar crickets, mealworms, woodlice and the odd fruit fly for good measure. Your set-up is very similar to mine – I have some cork bark hides which they use during the day. For creatures so small they are very bold which makes them quite entertaining.

Terry – can’t say I’m familiar with “beneath the moors” but it sounds fantastic.

Mark:

what i did for when my marms were small was to find a small worm and cut it in half, the worm wriggles so they know it's alive.

I have no problem cutting a worm into 10 pieces. The pieces even still move enough to appeal to the morphs Click the image to open in full size.

Ester

PS. at this time of year even the small worms are too big for most of my newts.

Hoi Ester!

Say, are these marms CB of your own or were they purchased? They look very vivid!

As far as worms go, I feed my adult marms whole worms and the juveniles get half a worm each. They seem to relish in the shaking of the worm before gulping them down. I've even seen the marm "cleaning"the worm with its front legs as if to dislodge any dirt before the gulp.

Mark: "Beneath the Moors"is a horror story and it tells of a race of sub-aqueous/ Amphibious race of beings called the Thu'unha living beneath the moors of england in cavernous habitats. The interesting thing is that their water lizard god "Bokrug" is more reminiscent of an anthropomorphic salamander than a "water lizard". One part of the story which confirms this is when the author encounters a place with bowls containing what appears to be "oversized Frogspawn".

You're all very lucky. Some day I'll expand my Triturus collection. But alas, I'll have to settle for the little squeakers I've got now. They squeak only when I chase them around the tank with the giant net. I've heard one ambystoma squeak one time, when chasing a cricket. Like Mark said, I think it's just a rapid expulsion of air.
