Well, I'm new to the world of video so it's very nice to see such positive comments. Perhaps next time I will be less hasty and make you an even better sequence (different newts of course). Dawn - the secret to my clean glass is low light, water changes and elbow grease. I'm hopeful I'll breed this species although I'm fearful that I have only females in my group - that would be a major set-back, time will tell when the youngest fully mature. |

You know, I've seen this species in person several times but it never occurred to me until I was watching your excellent video that they look remarkably like a lost species of Paramesotriton. I wonder if they are at all related.

| Phylogenetic analysis places C.asper closest to Triturus and Neurergus. Even more so than other species of Euproctus – hence the split to Calotriton. This was actually filmed using a small Sony handheld (can’t remember model). The Canon XL was dropped off a cliff in Africa and is suffering somewhat. When I put Canon stills lenses on the XL for macro work I lose auto focus – this makes it useless for objects that move. The XL would only be great for macro if I invested in a macro video lens. I’m not even sure Canon make one for the XL and if they did it would be astronomically priced. |

I have seen a flowchart somewhere that illustrates the taxonomical relations between the different salamandrid species, I've been searching a little...but haven't been able to find it. Does anyone know where it is?

To me they actually look like a cross between Paramesotriton and Pachytriton....but i consistently see similarities in pretty much everything so...

Mark - I manual focus my video at the moment and it works pretty well. I'll post something in the next few days.

| Can't help you with the video camera, but if you have access to a recent Apple computer, iMovie produces very impressive videos.
