Default Tylototrion shanjing ?

Recently got ahold of these guys, sold as T. shanjing but they are a fair bit lighter then expected (more of an orange-brown body then black). Was wondering if anyone more experienced could give they're opinion. For what it's worth they have access to a large water bowl that they completely ignore.

Sorry for any formatting issues as I'm on mobile.

Thanks in advance.

I'm not a Tylo expert by any means, but they look like what's been described as Tylototriton verrucosus pulcherrimus (Hou, Zhang, Li & Lu 2012).
I've also seen them sold as T. shanjing, but wholesalers of wild caught herps can be very unreliable when describing the animals they're selling, especially if they're one of a number of broadly similar species from a particular part of the world.

That seems to explain the lighter base colour. Is the care simmial to shanjing or do they typically prefer a more aquatic setup like verrucosus? They are eating well in their current setup which is good since they need some fattening up.

If they're doing well as they are I would leave them be and offer them a semi aquatic set up in the breeding season and see what happens. Tylos are usually kept in fully aquatic set ups because they do well when they are raised that way, adult animals that are used to leaving the water every year might not take to it as readily.

I agree these look like Pulcherima that don’t seem to exist in the hobby anymore. Keep them well fed and like shanjing ,is that both male specimens you have ? And is it only 2?

I'm hopeful that I have a male and female, when I ordered them I referred the fella making the selection to the caudata culture page on shanjing to help him pick a male and female. I haven't taken a look myself yet since I wanted them to settle with minimal handling. They started eating within minutes of being placed in the set up so I may take a look and some pictures this weekend.

Sadly yes it's only the two of them I would have liked to have gotten 3 or 4 but prices in Canada aren't the best and the woman wasn't exactly thrilled with the price I paid for two

Looks to me like you're right both males as far as I can tell.

There Are two colour variations of the shanjing's, it depends on from wich mountain they came, there is a dark one with bright Orange, and an light variations.
The shanjing's of my wife Are from Hun Nan, where still is a breeder.

Picture 3 looks female for sure, could probably tell better from an above picture by bulk and shape of animal sometimes cloacal shots aren’t accurate enough unless you part the lips

That's the best I've got right now (almost feel bad hounding the seller to send more pictures but for the price I probably shouldn't) may be able to get some more.

The 2nd pic looks very sick/emaciated to me, the first does look like a regular T. shanjing.

Under what conditions are you keeping them? Because this kind of newts need a real hummid 70/80% tank with at least 20° to 23°C.

I think these are pictures from the seller, the OP doesn't necessarily have these salamanders yet.

Sorry I wasn't very clear, I thought that was the case. I was pointing it out in case they bought it. I would think carefully before buying an animal that's been anywhere near it. It looks like the seller has a mixed batch of random Tylos, some rare, some not so much and some that are sick.
