Tylototriton verrucosus?

Greetings,
this is my first posting and wish someone here can help me to identify these salamanders. Got 10 of them today.

1) Are these Tylototriton verrucosus?
2) They are in qaurantine tanks now but they dun swim much. Is this normal?
3) There is 1 that is lighter in color. Seems grey color to me. IS this normal or just a color morph?

Hi Johnson,

Question 1: That's a good question. The answer is yes but these look intermediate between Tylototriton shanjing and Tylototriton verrucosus. There is a lot of variation within the verrucosus species so I understand your confusion. Someone needs to do some studies on the species and see how many species (or subspecies) it really contains.

Question 2: They tend not to like the water if they're feeling a bit stressed. These look to be wildcaught animals so it's quite likely they are feeling somewhat stressed. You should consider keeping them terrestrial until they settle into captivity. Are they eating for you?

Question 3: Yes, it's an odd colour morph but it's quite attractive.

Ya, I bet they are wild caught too. Have 10 of them but only one is feeding greedily under water. The rest are not eating at all instead they just lays around.

John, need your guidance.

1) What other extra effort can I do to get them to feed?? I had a small plate with life tubifex worms on the dry area and one in the water. Food wise in my country we dun have waxworms. Earthworms we do have alot but I have to go and dig myself.

2) 9 of them just lays on the dry area. Will they get dehydrate?? They dun even like touching the water!!!

3) I inspected them again and again and there is no visible injuries on them thus thinking of putting them together in a 4ft by 1.5ft by 1.5ft tank. Is it ok??

Hi,
I'd keep them terrestrial(with hiding places) and dark, then get some earthworms if I were you. No they won't get dehydrated. If you keep them terrestrial they have to have some access to water though like a bowl or something.

I did a 100% water change and raise the water level. Now 7 of them are feeding under water like pigs!!! So happy

Still have 3 more to go...
