Tylototriton verrucosus

This is a discussion on Tylototriton verrucosus within the Crocodile Newts (Tylototriton & Echinotriton)... forums, part of the Species, Genus & Family Discussions category; It has now approx. 3'' in length and is far bigger than any of it's aquatic siblings....

Crocodile Newts (Tylototriton & Echinotriton)... Two popular genera of Asian newts, the crocodile newts are diverse of habit, habitat, and appearance. The Mandarin or Emperor Newt, Tylototriton shanjing, is highly sought after.

It has now approx. 3'' in length and is far bigger than any of it's aquatic siblings.

It looks like the Golden one is adding some freckles, still no sign of morphing.

It is now about eight months old and just about 4'' long.
I suspect it may well be neotenic. It seems to have a different head shape with a larger forehead and smaller lower jaw than its siblings.

The little golden tylo doesn't seem so happy at the moment. It has become less active and I am not sure if it is ill or is maybe starting to morph. The caudal fin seems to be diminishing a little.

Its looking much more its normal 'lively' self now. I still suspect that it is morphing as the dorsal fin seems to be very slowly diminishing.
