Crocodile Newts (Tylototriton & Echinotriton)... Two popular genera of Asian newts, the crocodile newts are diverse of habit, habitat, and appearance. The Mandarin or Emperor Newt, Tylototriton shanjing, is highly sought after.

Default Tylototriton Shanjing (emperor newt) setup

Just finished getting my newts tomorrow, 55gal Tetra Fauna Viquarium setup 70/30 (Land/Water) live plants, plenty of hides. Layered gravel eco earth substrate topped off with moss. Water is 3inch in dept lots of filtration.

It looks very nice, but I would recommend you a bigger land area, and more hiding spots. My shanjing don't enter the water often, but they prefer to sit on the wood that is half in the water.

As Jari B said, Shanjing are much more of a land subspecies of Tylototriton rather than ones for going in the water a lot lol. But it looks good, well done :) I would make the water area a bit deeper personally though maybe 5 inches, in my opinion :)

I hope that the information in the PM's gave you a good idea how I keep my T. shanjing. If you have any more questions I would like to try and answer them from my opinion and personal observations.

Could you let me know where you ordered the newts from? I'm considering North American sources for Tylototriton.
