| Eurasian Newts (Triturus, former Triturus, Calotriton & Euproctus).. Triturus and its relatives (Ichthyosaura/Mesotriton, Lissotriton, and Ommatotriton) are a diverse and widespread group of newts. While mainly European, several species can be found in the Near and Middle East. Euproctus, the brook newts, are confined to Corsica and Sardinia. |

Hi everyone, I have noticed in the last month or so my female T. Marm isn't regularly going into her water area anymore. She is in a 40/60 water setup tank. I keep the soil area sprayed fairly well since she is using it more. Is this normal behaviour? She is only about a year and a half. She has been in the same setup since I got her as baby, and she was almost fully aquatic before. I have checked the water parameters, cleaned the tank, replaced some of the water. she is still only staying on land. Now I did put in a airstone and turned the bubbles down, but she wasn't going into the water before that. Any ideas?

With this species a terrestrial period is almost to be expected (it doesn´t always happen, but it comes naturally to them), specially if they can freely choose. I wouldn´t worry, it will likely enter the water for good during the fall.

I agree, this is normal and to be expected for this species. You may need to find different foods and feeding methods while she's on land.

Thanks a lot guys. That's what I expected to hear, but it never hurts to ask. Especially since I just lost one of my T.Marms. I got this male later on in the year from another person. It was significantly smaller then mine, even though we got ours at the same EXPO. This one never seemed to get any bigger and eventually died a few weeks ago. Jennewt, good suggestion; however I have always tweezer fed my girl in water and out. Shes pretty ferocious when it comes to eating. :) so not to worry about that one.
