Tiger Salamander & Axolotl (Ambystoma tigrinum, A. mavortium spp, etc.) The Tiger Salamanders and the Axolotl are so popular amongst hobbyists that they have been given their own topic. If you're particularly interested in the Axolotl, there is a large section of the forum devoted mainly to beginner Axolotl enthusiasts (not this topic).

Default Ambystoma tigrinum

Mario very kindly sent me a batch of these eggs, unfortunately the majority did not survive. However three are growing steadily. Today my first larvae hatched at just over 1cm in length.

yes its pretty kool how Captive breeding is popping up more an more john has also done this and hopefully people can learn from this and maybe help bring the species off the endangered list. i would really like to see more tiger salamanders in the pet trade and in the wild they are very fascinating creatures and would be a shame for them to simply vanish.

Bellabelloo, congratulations for the young "true" trigrinum larvae,

how do you feed he or she ?

you could start to give little pieces of meat !

It has been ages since I have posted about my little tiger.

I only ended up with one as it ate the other two

It became quite apparent that this has a problem. As a larva at one point it looked a little humpbacked .As it grew bigger this disappeared, but I noticed that one of the front legs was not moving and appeared a little stunted. It was suggested I amputate it in the hope it would regrow correctly, but it didn't. It regrew the same.
A couple of weeks ago it morphed, I was dithering about euthanasing it , but was curious to see how it would cope.
At the start of this week I transferred it to a terrestrial set up with loose cocofibre and leaves, a water bowl and some slate. I placed the tiger in the water bowl and waited. Yesterday it ventured out and I found it under the slate in a shallow hole that it had managed to dig. It fed this afternoon after being tempted out and this evening I found it back in its bowl. I am so far happy with it's mobility.
I shall be keeping a very close eye on it to make sure it is managing well.

The little tiger has been wandering quite happily around his tub for a few weeks now. He burrows and can sprint for cover if startled.. I think the little tiger will be ok with only 3 functioning legs .

Good to hear! That really is incredible. I wonder why his leg is like that? Maybe it was broken as a larva and never healed correctly? That is really strange. well anyway its good to hear he's doing good. - Seth

He is now getting a little bolder and less likely to run and hide now. The last few mornings I have found him waiting for food. I think he had been in his water bowl earlier as he was mostly clean, so it warranted a few photo's . He has acquired a name of Hopalong, not at all flattering but he doesn't seem to mind

I love his coloring! I never took to the yellow or green blotches most Tigers seem to have. How large is his setup? Is there anyway we could get a pic of his tub?

Sorry for such a delay..here are a couple of pics.

The tub is about 18'' long with a lid. He has maybe 3'' depth of coco fibre mixed with leaves, I thought this may help him with digging. He does manage to disappear into the substrate from time to time, leaving just his nose poking out. He spends most of his time under the water bowl.. the colour is horrible but I was limited with choice of pink or pink :/ He has moss to lurk under if he fancies a change.

Once I have bribed my older sons, I am intending to start their out door enclosure

I had thought I had lost one of the newbies, so this morning I dug them all out to check that they were all present... needless to say, one had hid itself very well. One is also looking rather rotund, I am hoping this is from indulging in too many worms.
