I've used styrofoam.It's very light and easy to cut to size if you get the right chunk.

I use plastic eggcrating covered by fine fiberglass windowscreen.

A false bottoms is generally something that causes a seperation between the bottom of the soil layer and the bottom of the tank helping to create a drainage layer. These layers help with drainage and can be used to help create the space needed for water features.
