would this DIY sponge filter work for a 10-15g tank housing 1 male JFB? http://www.aquarticles.com/articles/...ge_Filter.html keep in mind that sponge filters are very good biological filtration! |

With your stock I think that would be fine. All of my filters are sponge filters. Just make sure to be good about aquarium maintenance such as siphoning out detritus and doing water changes.

You can make the water as deep as you want. You'll want to leave room at the surface for areas to haul out, so don't fill it to the top. Do you have a lid? You'll need a tight-fitting lid, and most of us recommend screen tops, as they keep the tank cooler. Also, if you plan on planting heavily, you'll probably need supplemental light, unless you're keeping it in a pretty bright room. As for substrate, pool filter sand or play sand work just fine. Don't use 'calci-sand' or any type of marine sand, as these will raise the pH.
