With your stock I think that would be fine. All of my filters are sponge filters. Just make sure to be good about aquarium maintenance such as siphoning out detritus and doing water changes.

thank you! one last question, how deep should the water be in my tank? also, what should I use as substrate? I was thinking about getting playsand, but will having a very high water PH be bad?

You can make the water as deep as you want. You'll want to leave room at the surface for areas to haul out, so don't fill it to the top. Do you have a lid? You'll need a tight-fitting lid, and most of us recommend screen tops, as they keep the tank cooler. Also, if you plan on planting heavily, you'll probably need supplemental light, unless you're keeping it in a pretty bright room.

As for substrate, pool filter sand or play sand work just fine. Don't use 'calci-sand' or any type of marine sand, as these will raise the pH.
