With the tub you show in the photo, how would you provide ventilation? Any holes you drill will let out the fruit flies. I use plain old ordinary inexpensive storage tubs. Then I drill holes in the lid for ventilation. Then I cut up an old bedsheet into pieces a little larger than the tub. The cloth goes between the tub and its lid, and it allows ventilation, but keeps in the fruit flies. When the cloth looks dirty, I launder it. I'll post a photo if I get a chance.

Here is my solution to the problem. This allows ventilation, while it also keeps the fruit flies inside and the fungus gnats outside. If you wanted more ventilation, the whole top of the tub could be cut out. I live in a very dry climate, so I prefer to have just the small air holes to reduce evaporation.
