Help not sure what to do had my newt for about a year very recently she began to get chubby and now she is huge. she started eating algae disks for my cat fish i dunno of that could have gotten here in this situation but i'm going to post some pics and hopefully i can get some help for my newt. and I also noticed just recently after work her back legs began to float up a little off the gravel and she keeps trying to wedge her self in between some decorations to stay grounded. These are before and after photos |

| How was she able to get them? Cat fish are not really suitable tank mates for a newt. I find it odd that it would voluntarily eat algae wafers - has it been provided with sufficient quantities of suitable food? Newts are (strictly?) carnivorous and unable to digest plant matter which tends to sit in the gut and rot causing ulcers and assorted other conditions. Sorry to say but that looks pretty bad to me, not sure what to suggest. |

Could she have swallowed any of the gravel?

The corycat is a very timid fish it doesn't bother the newt and the newt acts like it isn't even in the tank. Yes I feed my newt blood worms and newt and salamander bites sinking pellets. It just walked up to the algae wafer and ate it I don't know why but I witnessed it first hand. As for gravel I've never seen him eat gravel the tank is in my bedroom I see it a lot never saw it eat that before but I don't know I guess anythings possible. Trying to see if anyone could give any clues or hints to help him out. And yes i read the article on bloat.

| The newt either has bloat or a serious impaction, although I’m not sure an impaction would cause such extensive swelling. My money would be on bloat caused either by organ failure, starvation or an infection. Isn’t the cat fish tropical? Newts like cold water. What temperature do you keep the newts? Heat stress can be a cause of organ failure. In the first photo the newts are emaciated. How long ago was this? Starvation is another cause of bloat. Please use capitals letters and punctuation in your posts. They are very difficult to read without. Thanks. |

The emaciated pic was about 4 months ago thats how they were at a petstore i purchased them from that went out of business. the became healthier looking after a week or two first few days this didn't eat after they adjusted to there new home they were ok. i keep my water temp at 68-70 degrees and the cory cats lower temp limits are around 70-72 cory cat does just fine ate 68 degrees farenheit. as i mentioned earlier i feed him newt and salamander bites and worms.
