Here is mine CFBN that I "rescued" from a local pet store. Everyone in the tank was dead except this little guy. He was rather lively and swimming around the tank. I quickly got him out and put him in my already established tank. I have had him for a couple of months and he was doing fine, swimming around, eating earthworms and bloodworms everyday to every other day. Until about a week ago he was always in the water (he came out at night and sat on land until morning) and now he never goes in and at the same time he won't eat. He has eaten anything for a week and will not go underwater for more than a minute. Do CFBNs do this during their life? One thing to note is the water is changed regularly is purified water and all levels are golden. The temperature was about 62-64 degrees and now it's about 68-70 degrees (summer). This can't be the only reason, can it? Has anyone else had this situation? Thanks for your help. Mitch BTW here is a pic of the little guy! |

Some do go through terrestial phases from time to time, though in my experience it is generaly due to stress or water quality problems. What exactly do you mean by 'purified water'?

I buy purified water, its purified through reverse osmosis. I do not use treated tap water. He hasn't been removed from the tank, and I haven't moved anything around either. I wouldn't be worried if he was eating. Thanks Mitch |

You really should read this article: http://www.caudata.org/cc/articles/Spring_water.shtml RO (reverse osmosis) water is not good for aquatic newts. This may be the reason your newt is staying on dry land. I would pay close attention to what the article says and move forward from there. Good luck! |

Ahhh . . . I will do a change to get rid of some of this water and I will try tap water (treated or aged). Thanks again, I hope this will do it! Mitch |

Do not just age your water. This will not get rid of chloramines. I suggest treating the water and then letting it sit out for a little bit.

After about a week of changing the water to treated/aged tap water my newt still seems to avoid the water and continues not to eat (after eating almost every other day!). I tested the water to find a ammonia/nitrite/nitrate levels all really good, but my pH is around 7.2 - 7.4. Could this be causing all the problems. Thanks for the help Mitch |

Your ph sounds fine. If he is staying on the land more, than try giving him a set-up that's more terrestrial.
