I cannot zoom in on your pictures at all, I don't know if other people viewing can enlarge them. Without it I cannot positively identify. Pictures from beneath and other angles will help ID. Perhaps a member of Lissotriton? Or maybe a north american species since you're that side of the Earth

Canīt enlarge them either. My guess is Notophthalmus viridescens... Unfortunately the poor thing is in really bad shape, so bad that recovery is unlikely. Personally i wouldnīt have bought it. I understand why you did, but it sends a terrible message...which is that they can still make money from sickly, dying animals... Itīs better to not buy the poor animal and hopefully noone else will, so the shop wonīt make any profit at all and perhaps decide not to order more newts in the future. Itīs still tragic that the shop just looses a few cents or dollar at the most, while the animal pays with its live, but it could save many others. I would encourage you to go back to that shop and give them a piece of your mind.

Use the siteīs uploading system. Just click the "manage attachments" button that appears below when you write a new message. I completely understand the impulse to try and save the little guy, or even just give it a decent place to die...but sadly, this kind of thing just encourages the shops to keep ordering these newts and keeping them in terrible conditions, which just takes the lives of many more poor animals. These newts (if itīs indeed N.viridescens) donīt adapt well even when they look healthy...this poor fella has almost no chance at all, iīm sorry to say.

I understand your desire to help this animal, and it's appreciated. You do need to let the store know that the way it is conducting itself is not good for business and not good for the animals. I would even insist on getting some or all money back so that you can put it towards the care of the newt. That may not be likely, but it's worth a shot. If it is N. viridescens, here is the species page for it Eastern Newt. The chances are not good for it's recovery, but if you want to give it a good and comfortable home, I'm all for it. Just be prepared for a struggle. |
