Greetings,

Back Ground:

I have been a reptile person for my entiire life.
Recently one of my three younger (8-12) daughters wanted
an aquatic pet. My mind thought frog at first, then I was
able the time I saved an axolotyl from becoming bait on a
fishing trip. I kept that guy for about 8 years, and was so
fond of him, he became a part of my childhood memories,
I thought I could give my girls the same experience.

I called several bait stores and found success. "Yes we
have them there water dawgs". I purchased two and set
up an enclosure. pH is 7.3. (Filter and air stone in play) They appear to be fine, save
for the gills on one of them are retracting. He is also spending
a massive of time on the bottom, only coming up for air sparingly.

I am relatively new to the axolotyl game, can someone please
tell me what is going on (are they actually Tiger Salamders)?

Please take a moment to look at the pictures, I appreciate your
time, and thank you very much.

That definitely looks like a salamander. I recommend that you immediately lower the water level and add multiple islands so they don't drown, because unlike frogs they are not fans of swimming. Here's a caresheet to reference, because I've never cared for a larval salamander and I can't give much more advice for you.

Tiger Salamander Care Sheet

If you've ever set up a semi aquatic enclosure for fire bellied toads it's pretty easy to set up a salamander enclosure, just add more land and less water. Make sure to add a quiet filter like one used for turtles. If you can't afford a filter, change the water every day/every other day. Hope you enjoy your new friend

"Water dogs" are usually tigers. Also I have never heard of finding axies in a bait shop.

Thumbs up Re: Need some help with possible transformation.

Yes that is a larval tiger salamander or ''Water Dog''. keep them just like you would axolotls. But when you notice its gills and tailfin start to shrink, add a gradually sloping land area to the tank. Then when you notice the salamander moving onto his land area, Read this article by the founder of our forum: Tiger Salamander Care Sheet
