Talking Feeding advice please?

I've bought 5 axies, all 10 months old and a four foot tank. The previous owner gave me frozen blood worm. I defrosted some, and put a bit in last night and all gobbled. I just wonder how much to give them due to age? I tried a small amount last night but really need some guide lines please.

How long can you keep the defrosted blood worm?

Also should I buy some pellets as well? gonna try catch some earth worms later (Yucky!).

Could use some name help too :) 3 that appear to be girls, I like Lola, lottie & I need another to go with that.

Two white boys (I think) Maybe Axl & .... I dunno

Not slash though lol.

Thank you x

Thawed bloodworms do not keep well for very long, soon you will notice a bad smell, and that's never pleasant. Keep them frozen until you are ready to use them, and just thaw them in some water from their tank. They are getting old, so you should switch to earthworms, but until then, my 2 subadult axolotls can eat about 4 cubes of bloodworms every other day. So, you could offer about 9 cubes (that may get expensive) every other day. Adults axolotls are pretty good about not over eating, but you can determine if they are a healthy weight by comparing their body width to their head. Their head should be slighty wider than their body when viewed from above.

Names:
Girls - Lola, Lottie, & Leah maybe?
Boys - Axl & Otto. So together it would be Axl Otto (Axolotl)

I personally have not named my Axolotls. I just never found anything suitable.

Good luck!

I know my friend feeds his adult axolotls nightcrawlers, and he just buys them from the local grocery store or bait shop. And he usually gives them a couple each every other day or every couple of days. But that's just how he does it, not sure about everyone else.

I know it's not really practical to answer a question with a question, lol, but...

Is it safe to feed them wild caught worms?
I have always been scared of parasites.

Hi Kim,

Worms dug from a pesticide/fertilizer free zone are fine - just be positively sure it is. Slugs are another option that can usually be found in the same areas. Considering you want to keep 5, you may want to consider raising your own worms.

Lol, that is a super idea and I thank you for it too, cause doing that will probably save me alot of money! And I can get started on it while they are still young.

Thanks,
Kim

If you do an internet search on "worm farm" or "worm farming" you will find loads of information. It's very simple, really - and you can even order ready-made kits to get you going.

As to cooling methods, there are several detailed in a Caudata Culture article (click here).

Hi im new to owning Axolotls so my advice isnt very good, im also trying to find a stable method of feeding earthworms... But my baby axolotls arnt in the tank at the moment... long story but my tank was really hot so i decided to find a way of cooling it done before i put them in... i did this by putting a damp towl over the top of the tank and having a large fan blowing onto it.. Seems to be doing an ok job but definatly helped... Oh and it helped to cool down my room which was good... And leahs my sisters name i will let her know shes now an axolotl lol
