Hi all! Does anybody have experience in putting amano shrimps (or similar) into their axie tank? Is this ok? I was thinking of buying a few (and quaranteeing them for a month), and putting them with my axie. I understand that my axie may eat them,if she is hungry, which would be ok.
Any advice? Thanks

I'm not familiar with amano shrimp. Are they clear and about 10-12mm long (ghost shrimp) or are they 6-10mm long and bright red (cherry shrimp)? They only draw back to any live foods like fish and shrimp is it can be a vector for disease. I have fed ghost shrimp to axolotl and newts, with out any ill effect. I use a reputable dealer at a Tropical fish store where his feeder stock is treated and healthy. The tiny red shrimp (cherry) I not sure if they are palatable. Ask your dealer what the requirements are for the shrimp (temps etc.) If they are a tropical shrimp, they may be stressed in your axolotl's environment, which may lead to disease that can potentially be passed down.

Thanks Al! They are like ghost shrimp, but very slightly bigger. I had ghost shrimp before in my fish tank, but they didn't live very long. I bought them as food, and the guy in the petshop said they will only live for a few days. He was right, apart from a few of them that lived up to 4 months.

It should read that they will eat them not they may...

Ghost shrimp can live for quite awhile (at work we had them for months with alligator snapping turtles) in tanks but when they molt they tend to be predated upon by the fish and each other.

Ok, so amano shrimp should be ok company/food for my axie? She has had the smaller see-through ghost shrimps in her tank before, but as she is nearly blind she didn't catch many,awwww...She did try attacking them, tho, but mostly ended up eating a mouthful of sand, as the shrimp had long ago moved away!

I get Caridina Japonica - yes, they make for good food if caught - they keep my Axie entertained chasing them - they chase him back some days - and they clean up like mini hoovers!

Great wee thinks IMO.

Default Re: Amano shrimps ok in axie tank?

I have a fully planted 75 gal tank. I have 4 axolotls in it, and about 20 Amano shrimp.
I recently added 15, because 5 were left over from 2 years ago when they were born in there from the parents I bought the first time I added them (when the tank wasn't nearly so grown in with plants and I had 3 axolotls)
I find, that if they survive the first 10 minutes and do not swim, disoriented, directly into an axolotls mouth, (as they do when first introduced) they establish little territories in safe, planted, and hard-to access areas.
As long as the tank is somewhat vast and labyrinthine, They seem to rarely become food. And if the numbers are high, it makes a noticeable difference in the algae. especially on the plant leaves which can compete much better with the shrimp to eat the algae.

It's okay if they get eaten. Generally, they don't.
