My sister bought me a new axie at weekend but he is very skinny (I don'y know where she got him from!) How should I go about getting his weight up? is it okay just to feed him more food and more often or is that bad for him?
I could do with some help please!

Firstly is the tank he is in a newly setup one or one that has been cycled? If it has only been setup you/she will have to test the tankwater every few days for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate using water test kits, available from petshop, and if need be do a 20%-30% waterchange. If you don't have test kits, take a sample of water to the petshop ask them to test for the 3 mentioned and get the figures -keep a record of them and also post them here if unsure.

Check out the following article on cycling: www.caudata.org/cc/articles/cyclingEDK.shtml

As for feeding depends on size and age. How long is he? What are you currently feeding him and how often? If less than 10cm then twice a day.
Between 10-15cm once a day. Above 15cm every 2 to 3 days.

A waxworm once a week will help to replace fats.

snip " waxworm once a week will help to replace fats"endsnip

Depending on what else is fed, the size (weight), age, temperature at which the axololt is kept and condition of the axolotl, a solitary wax worm once a week is probably insufficient to make any real difference in the metabolism of the animal....

Thankyou everyone!
The tank has been cycled but I'm still checking the water. He is about 12cm so I have been feeding him live bloodworms and brineshrimp jelly everyday but he seems to eat it so quickly so I've been giving him a bit more. I'm going to try the waxworms to try and get him to normal size, I feel a bit sorry for him at the moment!

Thanks Edward Click the image to open in full size.
I reccommended a solitary one, because usually when they're in that condition in the pet trade, they're very small. In my experience anyway.

Better for it to be slightly less than too much eh?
