If you have only had your axies for a few days, they are probably still pretty stressed, and waving your hand in their face probably isn't helping. Don't hand feed yet. Try a food that smells stronger. Hikari carnivore pellets or frozen bloodworms would be my suggestions.

I just recently obtained my first axie as well. Neo only eats when I drop the food right at his/her(?) face as well. You aren't alone! I just feed him one at a time and make sure he gets enough (and clean up what he doesn't get).

Your axolotls are quite small aren't they? If you can feed from a toothpick, or skewer, that works well, and is usually easier to control that having your hand in the water. When you say they keep it in their mouth, I think they are just trying to get the food in the right place before they swallow it. It's better than spitting it out.

i have found that when i feed frozen bloodworm by hand, that my axie isnt interested in the food, but more my hand. as such i have to place the food at the tip of my fingers so that when she has a go at my finger she gets the food anyway. the only time it is different is wehn i feed her earth worms. i just hold them in my finger with a bit dangling out and because she is nuts about them she will take it. In a few weeks i am going to try and train her to take food from the deck and not only be hand fed. i am going to place a tea cup saucer in the tank so that the food stays on that and not in the gravel.

If some is being eaten, then the spitting out is probably just because they are full. It is normal for them to continue to grab food even after they are full. If they are not eating any, or not enough, then you need to try a different kind of food.

Elissa, just hold the food between your fingers and hold it just above your axies nose, he will soon snap at it and grab it off you. Don't be surprised if your finger also ends up in his mouth, it doesn't hurt, mine likes to do that everytime I feed her. It depends what you are feeding eg - you could not hand feed thawed out frozen bloodworm. It is really easy to hand feed earthworms, pellets, freeze dried foods, fresh beef heart or liver. |

I've never had any problems, I worry about wooden skewers because she bites them so hard. Never thought to use tweezers, I think I would have the same problem with her, I rather her bite my soft finger than something hard that might hurt inside her mouth. Sharn, they are quick! I always try to make sure my hand is resting against the inside of the glass or something then let her take it out of my fingers. When I first started hand feeding it use to scare me half to death, the anticipation of when she would snap at it. Sometimes they tease you and hold their nose against the food for ages before snapping. |

I've just bought an axie. Never had one before and I got the works - temp control and filters and everything - but it won't eat. I've had it for over a month and it only ate once (at least that I know of) in that time. I tried leaving food in a dish a couple times just in case the scare factor was putting it off but it never looked like it ate any even though I gave it a few hours or even overnight/whole day a few times. Its still moves around though. I've got the temp thing set to 18C like I've been told although the other temp gauage has been saying more like 20/21C. No way I can lower the temp without it being too cold and flucuating all over the place. I've tried fresh beef heart/liver/kidney, fish meal, axie pellets and frozen bloodworms. The time he did eat, it was small pieces of beef liver.

Hes a fairly small fella though (about 15cm) - is it possible he just doesn't need more food yet? HELP Please! |
