Has any one thought about freezing the fish first. Would that kill off all the crud that they would pass on. They would be a easy thing to hand feed. I also thought about clams that are in a can? What do you think?

Frozen fish are thiamine-deficient, which can lead to problems in axolotls. Fresh fish, however, are fine.

Freezing feeder fish doesn't sound very practical. Freezing is not a humane method of killing, so how would you kill the fish first? And freezing doesn't necessarily kill all germs. It seems to me there are lots of foods that would be easier to acquire. Clams may be OK, but are they cooked or raw?

It was just an idea I had about the fish. The clams could be fresh or the kind that come in a can. I think the ones in a can are cooked not shure thow. What kind of fresh fish?

A third voice that freezing feeder fish wouldn't be an adequate method of killing microorganisms on or in fish. Many microorganisms can survive freezing quite readily. There is also the problem with thiamine levels of frozen fish. As for canned clams, yes, they are cooked. All canned foods are heat treated to prevent the growth of microorganisms (like Clostridium botulinum.)

Don't they freeze blood worms and brine shrimp to kill them?
