Default Keeping 1 vs 2 Axies?

I am planning on getting a axie here in the next 2 weeks, but I am wondering if I shoud pick up 2 instead? Would a 20g work for 2, or do I need something larger?

If I go with 2, what sexes should I get? Can I get two males?

Totally up to you.

A 20 gallon tank will work fine for 2 adult axolotls, as long as there is plenty of hides for them.

As to the sex of the animals, it depends on one thing: Do you want them to breed? If you want to try raising them up from eggs, it will happen with a mixed couple, eventually. However, if they lay eggs and you feel you do not want to raise them up, no problem, axolotls enjoy axolotl eggs and will solve the issue for you. If breeding is of no interest for you, any combination will work as long as both animals are the same size.

I plan on buying some that are around 3-4 inches, can you tell the sex that early? I would like two males.

Hi!

Mine is about 7 months old at just short of 6 inches, and have only recently been able to identify it as a male.

Cheers, Mike.

Hi PhxJosh,

To be really super duper certain, i would say its more accurate to sex axies when they reach around 1 and a half years of age. Some male axies are more easily sexed due to their prominent cloacal bulge even at a very young age. However, on the other end of the spectrum, there are axies that look suspiciously like females most of their lives until they give spermatophore surprises/shock. By 1 and half years of age though, most male axies will be fully developed enough to be apparent.

At 3 iches, the axies will be too young and small to sex.

Cheers.

Hi PhxJosh,

I agree with Rayson, at that age it will be a matter of 'pot luck' as to what you get (males and females look the same). I'm sorry to say it's near impossible to tell the genders apart at this age.
