Default Fish???

I am wanting to put some fish in my tank. I am aware of the axolotls eating them. Can anyone recommend a certain fish that will mix well with them.

Guppies or Minnows are your best type. The guppies will breed well as well.
Remember quarentine them for 30 days beforehand.

But you have to be careful, some fish will nip at the Axolotl's gills, so you should keep a close eye on them, and if it seems that this may be occurring, take them out asap.

I have some guppies. bought 30 cheap from a breeder. Put half of them in with the axys: there are still 10 left a week later.
the other half (much prettier ones imo) are in a smaller tank. hopefully they will breed and I'll get more.

Not sure where you are but in Sydney I know there about $2.50 each but they will most likely nibble at you axolotls gills and in turn your axolotl will eat them, I know Midnight would easily eat 2-3 of them a night

my guppies tend to stay well up near the top of the water, only going down for the occasional gulp of food, but only when the axolotls are nowhere near.
have never seen them go near the gills, but who knows, could happen?

I've written an article about keeping fish with axolotls that mentions the fish that make decent enclosure mates. Your best bet would be either white cloud mountain minnows, rosy red minnows or feeder guppies. The feeder guppies are best because they are far hardier than their fancy cousins.

Hey man, I put zebra or leopard Danios in with my axie. Until the realise that there is some danger there will be some casualties, but I have had about 6 in with mine for a few months now and they have even bred.
How long they last will depend on how much room you have in the tank - the more room you have the more room the fish will have to hide/run away from the axie.

You can also put in some Red Cherry Shrimp - you should be able to get some from another online forum for about $1 - they clean the tank and if you have a few plants for them to hide should last long enough to breed.
