Hey guys, recently I released some feeder fish into my axolotl's tank for him, this is something i do every month to give him a change from just pellets and worms, but it's been about two weeks (during which I've only fed him sparingly) and he hasn't caught any of them. I'm just wondering if the fish are stressing him out as he's less interested in his regular food and is a lot more restless. Should I remove the fish or is he just being lazy? I wouldn't be worried except every other time I've released feeder fish he's finished them all up in about two or three days. Thanks heaps guys :) |

Are they the same type of feeder fish you used in the past? If the temperature is cooler now, he may have less appetite than he did in warmer weather. In general, I would strongly recommend quarantining all feeder fish before putting them in with an axolotl. They are notorious carriers of disease.

How long do you quarantine the fish until you can feel safe about introducing them to your axie?

I bought about 10 tiny feeder fish months ago and the funny thing is 2 are still alive. I'm not entirely sure why they've made it; whether these two fish are just the fastest of the bunch or my Axolotls became tank mates with them X)

I've read quarantine should be for 2 weeks up to 6 weeks, but generally is around 3 to 4 weeks. Make sure when you add the fish from the quarantine tank to your axolotl tank you don't transfer the water as well.

Hey guys the feeder fish were quarantined for 6 weeks which is what I've been doing since I first started using them. They're the same as always and the temperature has dropped as it's Winter here, that does make sense now that I think about it haha. Thank you for that, I might get them out anyway and put them back in the quarantine tank to give him a quieter tank

Hi! I have had similar situations with some mosquito fish feeders. Some just wouldn't be eaten, they were too fast or my axies were too lazy. My axies have become more and more lazy the older they have gotten. I'm not sure if it is an age related thing or they have gotten used to being hand fed. The oldest 3 just refuse to eat unless i hand feed it to them. They were not like this when they were younger, i think when they are young they retain the juvinile instinct of snapping at things passing by for food. Now they have grown to expect food by hand and will not touch feeders ![]() My youngest two will still search for food. Maybe your axie has just grown up and gotten lazy and dependant? i know mine have. Or like Bella said it could be tempurature, it is winter here atm. Is he showing any other signs of stress like a curled tail or gills? Is he swimming franticly or has he gone off his worms? If not i don't think he is two stressed and its probably nothing. If they have been quarintined you could try catching the fish and hand feeding to make sure your axie is still interested? |
