hello everbody, i was just wondering that how many babies do axolotls lay on their first batch??? the reason for this post is i have some friends who are interested in axolotls now since they'd seen mine, so what im saying is i want to start breeding when my axolotls get old enough. my friends all agreed to help since my axolotls are doing the breeding.

Heya, I've just had a first batch from Molly, who's just over a year old (Not intentional, but such is life), and she laid approx. 75-100 eggs. Of those, I've taken out around about 50, and then lost 15 post-hatching(expect to lose a few- it's sad, but they go to play in The Great Lakes). Currently I have 35, *touch wood*, which amounts to quite a bit of work every day with BBS, blackworms and java moss. What I found triggered Molls was the midwinter solstice, so the temp dropping, the slow, steady shortening of daylight (I have the tank in a non-heated room with natural light), and then the slight increase in light in the three days following. A good thing to keep the babies in are large BPA free containers- here we can get them in 5 and 7 litres :)

They can lay anywhere from 100-1000.

I dread a laying of 1000...I honestly don't think I could bring myself to cull any of them ![]() Edit: Though leaving them in the tank when they're slightly out of reach, yes. Still felt bad about it...

If you aren't capable of raising/selling/culling all of your offspring, you should rethink breeding. I see so many people get excited about breeding axies, only to then be stuck with 40 juveniles eating and pooping up a storm that they can't even give away. Trust me, I've been there!

*nods* Wasn't an intentional breeding at all, so don't worry on that front :) And yeah, I've posted on here (But for free), a few have had offers of homes, a few are going to friends, one of the Melanoid Albinos is staying with me, and the rest I'll probably split between my LFS and the guy I got my original axie group off. And if I get caught with a thousand, that's what Dads are for :)
