I have had my axolotl Randall for about a month and a half. He is about 8 inches long. Yesterday morning I was still half asleep, but I thought I heard a splash. Then later on when fully awake, I heard a huge splash sound. There is a screen over his (he is actually probably a she but I really wanted to name it Randall) tank and there was water all over the wall above the tank. He was hovering near the top of the tank. I dropped some food pellets in and he immediately went to the bottom and started devouring them, and then dug at the sand where they had been. I gave him a few more. Do you think he was splashing at the top because he was hungry? Perhaps he felt the current from the filter or the cooling fan and thought it was something alive/moving/edible? He seemed perfectly normal today:)

If it was still early morning I wouldn't be surprised if he was just goofing off. They are most active at night, you know. As long as he hasn't been splashing at the surface all day, I'd say you have nothing to worry about!

One of my adults use to do this all the time when she was in a 10g, it seemed she just liked to push things around and splash late at night. Once i gave her more space it seemed to be much less frequent but it never seemed to be a problem. He's probably just trying to have some fun.

mine do this all the time, more so my melanoid. mine are also very active at night, so I'm always hearing them (the tank is in my room). you'll also occasionally hear them take a breath at the surface, something my melaniod also does often when active. it sounds like a "squish" or a "squeltching" noise. It's normal as axoltols have under-developed lungs that they sometime choose to use for some unknown reason.

It's good to know it's normal. Randall's aquarium is in my bedroom (in the coldest spot in my apartment) so now I know to expect weird sounds and hopefully won't be frightened when they happen:)
