Hi, I am a newbie to axolotl's and have just bought one from a woman who was selling 3. I had the female (the two males are a bit bigger, I didnt want them). I asked her what she fed them on and where she got the food from. She told me she feeds them on pellets and only buys them from a particular shop as this was the only place she knew that sold them. I phoned the shop to ask how much the pellets were and the seller said he had not had any pellets for a long time as they were not selling because of cheaper off the internet. This makes me wonder what she was feeding the axies on. I am wondering if my axie is overweight. She is about 2 years old and measures 8.5 inches long (21.5cm). When I got her home, I put my finger in the tank and she went for it as if it were food, so I gave her an earth worm and she ate it quick as if she was hungry. Here she is. |

she looks to be fine to me. a axoltol's middle should be about the same width as it's head.

Thanks Chris. I wont put her on a diet for now then. Unsure how much to feed her but yesterday, she had an earthworm (in morning) and about 10 catfish pellets around lunch time (very small round type size), and some of a cube of frozen bloodworm (thawed out), this was about 9pm. May sound a lot but it is not that much really.

Maybe she's full of eggs? She definitely mature enough for it...

I would say she is a little too well rounded . Too be honest, once they reach adult size they only really need feeding every 3 or so days. I tend to feed my lot a couple of eathworms around twice a week now.

Thanks. I am not feeding her today. She had a couple of small earthworms yesterday. She has been moving round the tank quite a bit. I placed her in a better tank with sand so she has something easier to push against, better tham a glass floor.
