Hello everyone! I'm very concerned about my juvenile leucistic axolotl. Two days ago, I was worried about her because she seemed unable to touch the ground. I had to leave home yesterday, and when I returned today she was laying on the ground looking very sick. I thought she was dead slat first because she wasnt moving, but I've isolated her in a large Tupperware container and she is alive. She seems very lethargic and slow. She refused to eat, her eyes appear cloudy, and the fine fringe on her gills is gone. Her skin also looks like it may be peeling. I did not notice any of these things before today. She lives in a 40 gallon long aquarium with another axolotl who is doing quite well, which makes me doubt water issues. They are on a diet of frozen bloodworms and pellets because I'm not sure they're big enough to be eating earthworms yet. They ate mostly on a bare bottom floor but there is a small amount of sand. The axolotl I'm concerned about is maybe 2 inches long. I don't have Internet right now (I'm using 3G currently) but I will Post pictures when I do. Any advice in the meantime is greatly, greatly appreciated!!

I would check your ammonia, nitrate and nitrite levels and tank temperature. What you describe sounds like a possible water quality problem.

I actually don't have a test strip, but I'll be going out omitrow to get one and will let ou guys know the numbers. As an update, I've now noticed a large red dot on her head that looks like perhaps a broken blood vessel? Also, the right side of her belly appears more swollen than the left. If these symptoms mean anything to anyone, please let me know! I will update again tomorrow with pictures. Thanks in advance for anyones help, I really appreciate any inormation

Here are some pictures! I've determined that what I thought was flaking skin is actually a cottony-like fungus, perhaps. It's mainly on her gills and front legs. I have her in the fridge now and I'm currently out the door to go get test strips and aquarium salt. Here are the pictures- ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Sorry for the bad quality |

I jut wanted o give a quick update and see if anyone has any more words of wisdom! Lula was ondeaths door for a while but today she took a turn for the better. She is more lively, all of the fungus is gone, and her fills, which were curled forward, look normal again. Her eyes aren't cloudy anymore, either. Now though she is floating and can't seem to touch the bottom. I'm most worried that she hasn't eaten in about a week. Is there anything o can do to get her on re ground and, most importantly, eating? We've come through a lot and I would hate to lose her now that she seems to be doing better. Any advice or tips are greatly appreciated!

I am really pleased to read that the fungus has gone. With regards to the floating, how about dropping the water level so it is just covering her. Try offering her small live food, such as bloodworms or earthworms. Please do keep us posted on how Lula is getting on. |
