So last night, I noticed that our first axolotl's arm was "dragging" behind him. I looked closely at him and sure enough he wasn't moving his leg at all, I then noticed that a rather large chunk of his tail had gone, you can see where it has been bitten by our other axolotl. These two have been in the tank together for months now and have never touched each other, but for some reason our melanoid has attacked our albino ![]() We've had the albino for nearly a year now and I don't want him to die, I've gotten quite attached to the little bugger :P At the moment, I have taken the melanoid out and the albino is in by himself. The problem: His leg is still attached and not moving, he isn't balancing properly and keeps tipping to his left. His tail was very curled (what is left of it) but seems to be much better this morning. The one thing that concerns me most is his gills..... It appears they haven't been touched by our other axie, HOWEVER, he is only moving one side, the side with the broken leg isn't moving at all. Should I fridge him? Should I keep him in the tank and do daily water changes? I'll take some pictures later on tonight and post them up. Any help would be greatly appreciated :) Thanks James |

Axolots are amazing healers. You shouldn't have to do anything different and it will heal on its own. Just keep it separated to keep it from further attacks.

Thanks :) Because this was our first axolotl he has taken priority, we are going to try and find a home for the other one, if we can't find one soon, we are going to take him to our local store, we know them in there and are confident they will look after him. If they will take him that is :/ its such a shame. We got the melanoid because it had been attacked and was looking unwell and now this ![]() Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2 |

How old is the axolotl that attacked? Just because there was one attack doesn't mean it will be continuos. My axolotls I have now use to rip eachother whole arms off, now they're fine after being separated and reintroduced. Also the older the axolotl the slower the regeneration as well, but it still should heal and fine after the next few weeks.

Not 100% sure how old he is but they are both at least a year old now I think. They have both been in the tank together now for about 6 months Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2 |

I've had some cases where the limb has been pulled off to the point where regeneration wasn't possible. I would have him in the fridge immediately to stave off infection, and to start accelerating the healing process. The second you see (if you see) any sign of white fluff start salt baths. Check out the tutorials at the start of the Sick Axolotl section for further instructions. As to the other axie, they should be okay when you reintroduce them. I'd probably be adding in a few more hides and more plants to reduce the risks of further attacks.

| Agreed. Seperate axolotl, leave nature to do the work.

What about his gills? He is only moving one side? Is this because he's been attacked? I'd also like to add that he is still eating alright :) Just fed him some bloodworm and he sucked them up quite happily. | |
