Default Poorly plants?

I'm still a month away from getting any Axolotls in this tank (school holidays, away a lot etc.) so it's hopefully going to be in really good condition when I do get them.

My plants are in John Innes number 2, in tights then stuffed into pots or into cracks between things. They are not looking so healthy though.

I've put some fish safe iron into the water, they have light for around 8 hours a day and I've been taking out a bucket ful of water every few days and replacing it with clean water and dechlorinator.

Any ideas much appreciated. I'm really trying to get the floating plants to take over so they provide more shade below.

The weird root thing you see coming out of the top of this is a floating spider plant. But you can see how this plant is looking soggy and unhappy near the pot.

This the whole tank, it's 2ft wide, 1ft deep.
