Default Sand vs Pebbles

Hi guys,
I'm looking to prep a tank for an axolotl. I was wondering if anyone has an opinion on which is better, or if an internal/external/undergravel filter is better with either type.
Much appreciated.

Steph

Undergravel filters are terrible. They trap waste and aren't effective as filters. Gravel is inappropriate foe axolotls as it can cause impaction.

So, which would you suggest sand or large pebbles?
Also, would you say an external or internal filter is better for a 45l tank?

Even sand can be a problem if your axolotl eats a lot of it, but under normal circumstances sand would be acceptable. The pebbles need to be at least twice as large as your axies head, otherwise you could risk accidental ingestion.

Bare bottom is the easiest & safest.

Pebbles are also a pain in the butt to clean under.

tru sand is actually soo much faster and easier to clean u just siphon just above the sand and all the fist waste close to it goes up. piece of cake
