does anyone know if a small bamboo plant would be ok to put in a newt tank?

I've used it before with no ill effects other than it wanted to take over the world. With proper husbandry it may work.

If it gets to the height you want, you can cap the top and it will stop growing. This can be acomplished by dipping the top of the bamboo in hot wax and allowing it to cool. I used this method in a few of my fish tanks and it worked great!

I think you are referring to "lucky bamboo", which is not a bamboo at all, its a dracenia.

Real bamboos aren't so easy, although i do have one thats not 1.5m(5') high, in a vivarium, if its not yet been eaten by spider mites.
