I noticed a red tubular structure hiding behind my axolotl's right gill today. I suspect this is a relatively recent development (past ~2 weeks), but given it's location, I could have missed it in the past. I recalled seeing similar structures posted here. I found at least two threads from people who had similar problems. But, both seem relatively inconclusive as to what is going on here and how it correlates to health of the animal.

I tried to take some photos of the structure, but due to its location, capturing it is a challenge. I don't know the age of the animal, but he's a minimum of 5 yrs old, in case it's an aging thing. He's been alone for almost a year now, so it's not likely from a physical attack. Water quality/temperature is great.
In general, this outgrowth doesn't seem to be affecting him mood-/activity-/appetite-wise. I haven't heard any follow ups on the above axie cases. So I was just curious if any knows exactly what this structure is, if they can be avoided, and if it is a bad sign for the future of my axolotl?
