I have found that taking pics of axies is problematic, first, aquarium glass doesn't like flash. you have to angle it and this skews proportions a bit. although, without flash it is very hard to focus.

with flash you get a crystal clear pic, but it doesn't look right, tends to look too colorful, eyes lite up too much, if you can get a clear pic without flash, it seems to be a better representation of what they look like.

these to pics are the same animal in the same spot.

I try to avoid using flash. You might have good luck setting up a tripod and taking pictures. This holds the camera steady, and providing the animal doesn't move, it makes for a more crisp picture at the longer exposure time.

I think the one you took without flash looks better. But if you want a brighter pic without flash, you can set up lights near what you're taking a picture of and experiment with that.

heres a couple more, no flash

I think the pictures look great - and so does your tank setup. Makes me wish I were axolotl-sized so I could go exploring there, too!

I agree, tank looks great and pictures are much better without flash. Actually that applies to most photography.

Wow what an amazing tank setup. What size tank do you have??

loves those design, looks like a cave!!! much more interesting than those PVC tubes
how u made it? just pile up the rocks?
mind taking a whole picture of the tank?

I find that if you hold a lamp above the tank and experiment with angle you get very clear photo's with no flash. Unfortunately I havn't worked out how to upload them yet. Should have it sorted soon.
